Pointing the low-cost optics and limited electronics of a phone camera at a bright, high contrast subject like this silhouette is a cruel thing to do. The results can never show the subtle details and tones which a photographic system costing twenty times as much could deliver. But the shape of the flower holds up well: the outline is clear to see and easily read as a tulip.
Shape is one of the building blocks from which images are formed. Exploring shape, even with simple cameras and basic lighting, helps us refine our eye for a picture.
The setup for this shot was also used for the colour close-up of the tulip in the next post.
