My camera introduces me to some interesting people.

I’ve just finished photographing some of the surviving letters and postcards penned by the composer Elgar. This striking black wax seal is on the back of an envelope containing a hand written letter. The folded paper inside is printed with the heading “From Sir Edward Elgar, O.M., K.C.V.O., Master of the King’s Musick, Lord Chamberlain’s Office, St James’s Palace, S.W.1.”.

 A pen filled with black ink produced a clear, fine script on the brief note, seventy six years ago.
